[this is good] I was so sick yesterday I missed that it was blog for choice day.  There is one thing (of many) that I don't understand about these specific bullets:

"[W]omen who have had an abortion require psychological treatment
of such symptoms as nervous disorders, sleep disturbances, and deep
regrets,"

"[W]omen who have had an abortion suffered from diagnosed post-traumatic stress disorder,"

"[W]omen who reported post-abortion trauma also reported suicidal tendencies,"

Don't these things occur just as frequently in new mothers???

Or women that have never had kids? Apparently it takes more than 300 years to overcome Puritan sensibilities. Ack.

[this is good] More importantly, these bullets contain a lot of self-reportage.  Because we don't have a national health care system, we have no way to collect data on all women having abortions.  Instead, all we get is data on women who say they had abortions and suffer these consequences.  All the women who have abortions and don't experience these things--we get no data on them at all.  Now you take a country like the Netherlands, with national health care, and they have medical records going back to the 50's that show no correlation between abortion and breast cancer, let alone abortions and mental/emotional disorders not previously diagnosed.  Of course, they're also not insane about abortions or birth control, and lo!  They have lower abortion rates.

Oh, and just as an example of how self-reporting skews things: Duke Med School did an interesting little survey of about 1,000 men.  Asked how large their penises were, the average erect length was 6.75 inches.  When the medical surveyors conducted actual measurements of the participants, the average erect length was 5.9 inches.  Hmmm...

[this is good] I totally agree with you, Mariser, and with all of the above comments.  Right on, Redzilla!

[this is good] Well-asked questions. Way to go, Mariser and RedZ.

I'm still amazed though, how one thing seems so right in one place and so wrong in another.

  • "[W]omen who have had an abortion require psychological treatment
of such symptoms as nervous disorders, sleep disturbances, and deep
    regrets,"

  • "[W]omen who have had an abortion suffered from diagnosed post-traumatic stress disorder,"

  • "[W]omen who reported post-abortion trauma also reported suicidal tendencies,"

  • Well the interesting thing would be to get actual numbers for the above issues and compare them to the incidence of women with Postpartum depression.    Some studies put mothers with postpartum depression at 10% to 15%.  Adolescent mothers at 26% to 32%.  See www.obgyn.net page

So we have a large number women who have depression after giving birth.  But I don't hear anymore wanting to ban pregnancy.
