[this is good] What?
Virtual reality, indeed.

[this is dethpicable]

Oh!  Oh!  I heard this on the radio this morning while I was still half asleep in bed!!!  Liars.  I hate that.  Fucking liars.  How could they?  and why???  gah!

IG

[this is good]
WHAT!?
  *slack jawed*

RedScylla

[this is good] As if the people who survived Katrina don't already feel sufficiently forgotten about and shoved aside.  Now we're altering reality to pretend it never happened?

IG

er, i didn't mean [this is good] I meant...you know. WTF.

SweetMisery

[this is good] Yes lets sweep this under the rug. We wouldn't want the world to know the truth. We have forsaken New Orleans.

mariser

ripped from the pages of the Stalinist handbook
"if we pretend it didn't happen, it didn't happen"
"if we pretend it didn't happen, it didn't happen"
"if we pretend it didn't happen, it didn't happen"

and IG, don't worry.  I've done the same thing.  VOX really needs to add a non-positive statement to choose from.

Google also censors some of the videos from Iraq at the request of the US Government. (They deny it's at the request of the government but why else would they censor them)  You can still see them if you use the UK search.

pyrl

Hmmm. I know some serious map people. I will make inquiries. Might be interesting to see what they think. I'll get back to ya, if I get any additional perspective.

mariser

oooo, please do and let us all know.   I know there have been changes because I used GE to look at New Orleans three weeks ago (no saved screenshots, unfortunately), and it corresponded quite well to what we saw a dew days later.

mariser

that is news to me, Kevin.  how sycophantic.  I would have never known, as I am too much of a wimp to watch those videos.  the written description is quite enough for me.

Stacy

WTF!? This makes me so sad.

"surely City Hall and other assorted city boosters didn't encourage Google to present a less devastated picture of the city, no?"

I don't know, m, I wouldn't discount this entirely, especially if they're interested in rebuilding tourism?  Put your best face forward and all that.  If that's the case, NO's politicians' main interest is money, tourism is money, looking good is tourism...  and Google can make them look good.  Just a thought...

Dancing Bear

I wonder if ClearChannel owns Google Maps. That is wierd isn't it.  i saw that on the news this morning and couldn't figure out why.  We used to chat with a friend in Miami via the NOLA cam.  They satnd on the street and read posts and we would do it for hours (not continuously) and send her messages.

Tallulah Bankhead

I have no desire to watch them either... I had read about that on a forum and did check to see if it was true and... it is.

pyrl

One map person I spoke with today said Google buys US images from each state. Still, no idea why Google Images is using false data on New Orleans.
It doesn't make sense. Some map companies have refused to sell images to Google. To me, I will now think of Google Images as unreliable and unrealistic.
I have another map friend who I'll check with too.

Dances With Cats

[omgwtf] The correct Google maps have probably been buried with all the BBC's news footage from Sept. 11, 2001. The piece of footage of particular interest is one that keeps cropping up on YouTube and Google Video in which a newscaster is talking quite dramatically about the explosion and destruction of the second tower--while the video behind her shows a picture of the tower complete and undamaged. Apparently BBC reporters are psychic, because the time stamp shown on the video indicates the feed from New York was live while she was predicting the tower's fall. Every time it appears on YouTube and Google, it somehow gets pulled, but people just keep posting it again.
